Meuse bridge (The Netherlands)
The bridge over the river Meuse is one of Venlo's biggest logistic junctions, connecting the Blerick quarter with the rest of the city, and was completely renovated in 2007. Part of the renovation consisted of redesigning and reconstructing the railing.
A student at Fontys Hogeschool (Fontys University of Applied Sciences) in Venlo was responsible for the art decoration on the railing and incorporated various characteristic images from Venlo which were illuminated with conventional lighting. In keeping with the progressive character of the design, Scheuten Glasgroep and Lagotronics were asked to use LED lighting as a light source.
In December of 2006, Lagotronics was approached to provide the LED lighting in the glass panels of the new railing. Lagotronics, the student, the city council and Scheuten Glasgroep together decided to develop a new kind of glass. Because the natural colour of glass is green, the white LED lighting would cause the glass to appear green as well. Scheuten therefore specially developed an unusually transparent kind of glass, almost devoid of green particles. To illuminate the decoration, Lagotronics was asked to license Scheuten Glasgroep the DOT matrix technology which is used on LagoLED® DEKO Panels.
A waterproof profile, produced in collaboration with some local companies, was placed on the top side of the bridge's railing and was meant to house the DecaLED® IP Strips. The white IP strips shine directly into the glass. The DOT matrix then catches and reflects the light. By applying the proper dot matrix patterns, Lagotronics can adjust the illuminated part.
Lagotronics is very proud of this eye-catcher which illustrates the endless possibilities of LED lighting.
